The Lilac Fire as seen from Sage Creek.

The Lilac Fire was a fire mostly affecting Bonsall, which is about 13 miles from Sage Creek.

It was first noticed around 12:20PM on Thursday, December 7th, 2017, as a plume of smoke rose to the northeast. School continued and was released at the normal 2:30PM that day, but as students watched the news coverage for the fire on TVs, school districts nearby began announcing closures. It wasn't until about 9:00PM that night that an email and tweet were sent out from Superintendent Dr. Ben Churchill and Principal Cesar Morales relaying that Carlsbad Unified School District would be closing the following day, Friday December 8th, 2017 "Because of the potential loss of critical support infrastructure, including power and communications networks, as well as poor air quality".

The Lilac Fire burned it's course, leaving Sage Creek safe.
